Discover the Best Dog Parks in Cedar Rapids
Dogs need to run free and off-leash on occasion for good exercise. Special enclosed dog parks offer this opportunity in the Cedar Rapids area year-round, even during the cold winter months. Some apartment communities, including Pheasant Run, located on the west side of Cedar Rapids, also have special areas for dogs.
Local parks also offer opportunities for dog owners to socialize and exercise. Some parks that include areas for dogs also offer other recreational opportunities. The parks are always fenced with many acres of grass, gravel, trees, and hard surfaces.
Dog owners must have a permit from the Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation office to enter all dog parks in the city. The permit requires proof of rabies, distemper, and parvo vaccinations for your pet. Owners need to know the dog's tag number. A day pass or an annual permit is available. Permit holders agree to follow the rules posted by the Parks Department. They are also advised to check the times the dog parks are open.
Many of our residents at Pheasant Run, Cedar Rapids favorite apartment community, choose to live here because of our friendly pet policy and private enclosed dog park. We also love to help residents discover new dog parks around the city. Let's check out our favorites!
K9 Acres Off-leash Dog Park
K9 Acres has three separate yards in this 11-acre park that is completely fenced. The main area has eight acres in a grassy setting with a walking trail, benches, and an open-air pavilion for guests.
This park includes a separate two-acre training yard exclusively for dog owners to train and prepare their dogs for the main yard. One dog owner is permitted into the yard for 20 minutes at a time. This is an excellent opportunity to check out how well your dog responds to your commands when it is not on its leash.
A separate one-acre yard is reserved for small dogs and has an open-air pavilion. Many dog owners prefer to keep their smaller pets away from the larger dogs.
K9 Acres is complete with water for dogs and trash cans with dog waste bags. Dog owners are required to clean up after their pets. K9 Acres is located in Wanatee Park at 5200 Golf Course Road. Ample parking is available.
Wanatee Park offers trails and campsites for visitors, as well as an off-leash exercise area for dogs in the park. It is adjacent to K9 Acres.
Cheyenne Dog Park
This 13.8-acre park is located near the Cedar River off Old River Road. It is the largest dog park in the area, with a training yard and a small dog area in addition to the main yard. The main yard has a walking path through the woods nearby. There are also benches and an open-air shelter.
The concept of a training area to prepare your dog for mingling with other dogs is part of the program for city parks. Cheyenne Dog Park opened in November 2001. It is the oldest off-leash park in the city with ample parking. Water for dogs, trash cans, and disposal bags are available. The permit is required for entry.
12th Avenue Dog Park
Located at 405 12th Avenue SE, this is a half-acre park with concrete entry areas and benches. The fenced park also has a shade structure with benches, picnic tables, a drinking fountain, and a jug filler. The 12th Avenue Dog Park does not have separate areas for small dogs. The small park was created to support the development of 450 new residential units in the area.
Bever Park
The K9 Splash at Bever Park is an annual event held in August. Over 700 dogs and their owners have participated in this event held in the park's pool. The park is located along the Cedar River. This is a fundraiser for the city's parks.
Businesses are asked to sponsor the event. There is a drawing for prizes, including gift certificates for dog food and other canine products.
